Leading international law firm is looking to hire an interim Head of Risk to work on an initial 12 month FTC, taking ownership of the entire function and reporting in to the Director of Risk. The role will suit a candidate with advanced knowledge of conflicts and financial crime issues, as well as experience in implementing risk and compliance strategies in law firms. Duties will include the overall day-to-day responsibility for Business Acceptance within the firm, including acting as a point of escalation for the Business Acceptance Manager, advising partners and fee earners on conflicts of interest and financial crime issues and assisting the Director of Risk in the resolution of local and international commercial conflicts, administering the international conflicts resolution process under the supervision of the Director of Risk, acting as deputy MLRO and supporting the MLRO with a range of relevant issues, including dealing with internal suspicious activity reports and external SARs, keeping up-to-date with changes in relevant legislation, policies, procedures and practices, acting as the firm’s Anti-Bribery & Corruption Officer and monitoring the Gifts and Hospitality register, including providing advice to partners and fee earners on potential bribery and corruption matters, acting as the firm’s Sanctions Officer and advising partners and fee earners on potential sanction issues, supporting the MLRO and Director of Risk during regulatory audits and visits, and ensuring audit points/findings are timely and effectively actioned, supervising the Business Acceptance Manager in preparing documentation for the annual AML Risk Assessment and the annual Independent AML audit, representing the Risk Management Team at Heads of Business Services’ meetings and developing close relationships with other business services functions to facilitate cooperation and knowledge sharing. supporting the Director of Risk in ad hoc enquiries from the business and organising and presenting training on relevant issues which may arise during the maternity cover period in relation to Risk issues. Applicants must be able to demonstrate understanding of the risks faced by an international commercial law firm, have the ability to manage the resolution of legal and commercial conflicts of interest both with regard to the applicable regulatory requirements and taking account of the competing needs of the firm’s partners and international offices in conjunction with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals and teams at all levels across the firm’s UK and international practices. This hire must understand the demands of fee earners and is able to provide commercial solutions under pressure. Applicants must be degree educated (professional qualifications are beneficial but not essential) plus have a number of years working in a Risk/Compliance function of a law firm with previous Head of/Senior Manager/Manager responsibilities.
